I will be in North Wales from Sunday 10 May to Friday 15th May and was wondering if anyone would like to join me and Pete (Hamster) for a possible trip to the lost world of Cwmorthin. I understand it involves a short SRT pitch to gain access off lake level. Has anyone paid it a visit recently? I believe the pitch involves a rather vintage bit of metal work to abseil from and this might prove a problem.

Failing that, there's always other things to do in there:)

May have a couple of other experienced explorers with us too

About five years since we were there but as I far as I can remember the pitch down from Lake Level was a fairly unremarkable 25metre-ish one down a slab. Think there was a very sharp edge about halfway down so a rope protector and a bit of caution is likely needed. Van rigged it. Possibly. He might have more to add. Or might not.

The climb up afterwards will probably need someone slightly adventurous to lead it.

Thanks, RJV, will look out for the sharp edge. I know care must be taken not to disturb the original ladder

Be sure to rig off everything. Don't trust just the couple of bolts in the roof, they are suspect. Back up to either the big boulders back in the level or off the rockman's peg at the top of the chamber, or both :)

At some point I'll go make the pitch head there safer and nicer.

Many thanks, Miles, will be as careful as it's possible to be 🙂
