Hi everyone,

Im a masters level architecture student looking into the ruined and abandoned buildings of the slate quarries / mines of North Wales for potential adaptive reuse. (purely academic study)

Im planning on looking at the Dinorwic and Cwmorthin sites, Could somebody please suggest some other sites that have a lot of abandoned buildings?

I would be very grateful.

Thanks 🙂

Just out of curiosity, what would make the remote ruins worthy of reuse? Are most not too remote to be even thought of being reused? Not having a go or anything i'm just curious as to the thought behind it! 😉

Thanks for the responses, will certainly have a look into these!

The thought behind it is to try and find an appropriate use so that there is reason to preserve the buildings that are a key part of the history of the slate industry in Wales. The remoteness of some of the sites is really interesting, it could be seen as both a positive and a negative, I for one think that the seclusion of some of the sites is what makes them so beautiful. you definitely wouldn't be allowed to build new structures where some of the ruins are!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
