Fancy actually getting underground on a Thursday Nighters trip? Read on....

A re-visit to Drws y Coed, taking advantage of the still-long Summer evenings to try out a shaft and a few other levels and adits dotted around which I hadn't noticed on my two previous visits there.

Lets meet up here:

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.057428&lon=-4.183857&z=18&r=0&src=msl

at around 1815?

The shaft I had in mind is around here:

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.056437&lon=-4.18448&z=19.2&r=0&src=msa

and there are at least three adits within 50m of the shaft.

We can then work our way East towards the main workings. As a matter of interest, does anyone know what these round things are? Cairns??

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.051051&lon=-4.163101&z=19&r=0&src=msa

Anyway, bring SRT kit for the shaft and anything else we might find. I'll bring the 50m rope which should suffice. There are a few handy trees near the shaft that we can rig off so it should be fairly straightforward.
Usual gang will be in attendance, "minus" MHSaher but "plus" Rostram
Anyone else fancy it? New faces are always welcome! PM me if you are not sure?
Underground? SRT?? New Ground??? Be there!

Ah, we DID get underground on your trip! I did a contortionist act, got wet feet, explored a 50m long trial adit and found a broken 1970s wine bottle. Groovy. 😉.
Wyn sent me some photos that he had dug up and that flooded level that I nearly "persuaded" you to go up IS the lower adit.
I will post up the photos when I get five minutes!

Cheeky little project maybe? Before the nasty weather comes in. 😉

A good evening's work would see the water level dropped, no problem. A bit more work involved in clearing the remaining silt to get any decent progress inbye.
I'll start another thread and post up links to the photos, maybe someone has a plan of the UG?

Will be there (as stated).

The round things are wind shelters for walkers/mountaineers I believe.

As Rostam said, shelters, but built out of prehistoric cairns (usually bronze age). It looks as if I'm going to miss a good trip 😞

Blimey. I abseiled down that shaft 33 years ago, when I was 16. Shan't tell you what's down there though!

Hi Robin. I suspected there is more to Drws y Coed than I previously thought, starting with this shaft. I'll be in touch after we find out what's down there to see what else we may have missed!

Have fun tonight folks! I'll think of you from the Southampton dock I am still stuck at, waiting for the BGS to sort their stuff out before we can sail...:(

I did a rough survey of one of the lower levels several years ago. It struck me that it might be possible to proceed at water level to east of 'the bridge' if suitably equipped.
