Can anyone out there furnish me with any info on the History of, or anything to do with F.Reddaway & Co Ltd. who worked out of Victoria Mill in Cheltenham Street, Pendleton, from 1879 to 1954 when they were taken over by George Angus & Co Limited.
The reason for my question is that I came accross an invoice of thiers to supply South Crofty Mine in Cornwall with Belting and engine packing etc, etc.
I have posted a copy of the billhead in my personal album. Check it out, the graphics are wonderful.

Hi, I know it is along time since you posted about the above,but the letterhead is still in your album so I assume you are still interested.I only joined today,finding your post,but I am a member of the family,but not close.I do have a catalogue
and article written by Frank jnr.but its not much.They did have
a very large operation in Russia but lost it all in the Revolution,
and old Frank had a memorial erected to him in Latvia I think because of his efforts to save his staff-it is on the net.He also took out many patents for his inventions,some of which are on the net.He also was in a Law case,Reddaway v Baughan which is still a precedent used today in cases of "passing off"or copying . Many thanks for the reply, It was quite a surprise to see one after so long and as I said in the original post, any info would be gladly received.
I'll see if I can chase up some of those bits of info, unless of course you have any links?
You mention about the memorial in Latvia for saving his staff, was this during WWII or during the Russian Revolution?
Anyway this is all fascinating stuff and adds to the tapestry of british industrial ingenuity and how it was exported to the world.
Unfortunately not quite the tale anymore.

I haven't had a chance to dig out anything except that I made a mistake,it was Estonia not Latvia.They were a very large firm,Stock Market quoted,and international.I've been on the Ellis Island NY site and find Frank in and out of America like a yo-yo.He also took out USA patents for inventions one of which was a new weave for billiard tables.Their initial major business was belting to drive machines off the steam engine main drive and then onto conveyor belts.The theory of "camel hair" was it gave more grip and less slippage so saved on coal.They were big in hoses and the famous Sphincter grip was born,surely unacceptable today,as a slogan.but very descriptive and easy to relate to.

Many thanks for the information guys all very interesting. When you find information about something such as this letterhead, it really adds context to the item.
The link to the court case made for good reading and the names involved with the final ruling are still big today. It was interesting to see Prime minister to be, Asquith and Lord Herschell involved with the judgement. Many thanks to LionelBently for the link :flowers:

I have a hardback titled the moscow correspondence 1917-1938. With info on f. Reddaway and russian claims . Every page has a distinctive mark you can see if held to light with a camel and camel belting . This hardback has printed offical copies of the various russian trade agreements. Between russian and his Britannia majesty's government and the government of thr russian socialist federal soviet republic. I cannot find any info on this item and I have tried every possible search . Hope for any feedback thank you. 😞

Hello. I know this thread was originally posted 10 years ago but wondered if anyone was still active on the thread? I have just come across this and I am Frank Reddaways great grandchild and have a keen interest in the family history. User ‘Rendersthermole’ you mentioned you were family and I wondered what relation?? If anyone wanted further information on F Reddeway perhaps I can help.

Hi there. I'm still active on the site here and have chased up a few of the more easily found references.
I had no idea that my initial enquiry would generate so much interesting feedback.

I have just come across this fascinating site, by accident, whilst researching F. Reddaway. To the O.P. Roy Morton, I have some old photographs of their Russian mills which I will add to my album when the site allows me to upload them, also a Russian map of the site.

Of interest to the family members: I also have a photograph of a page from the Salford Reporter, about a presentation made by the employees of F. Reddaway to their boss. I also have some old family photographs and a part completed family tree. I bought all of these at auction some time ago and it is fascinating to add some context. Does the name J. Atkinson mean anything to either of you? Originally from Acton, apparently, he then moved to Salford.

The name Atkinson doesn't ring any bell with me. I thought I'd take another look at the link to the court case, but University of Cambridge website returns a 'file not found' noteice.

AN member Tinny mentions a book with Russian content.
Maybe send him a PM for some further info.

Thanks Roy,

I've managed to upload the photo's now so you can view them. They were all in a pile of "stuff" which I acquired and apart from these pictures, everything else seems to revolve around a Mr. J. Atkinson.

I do know that their "Camel Hair Belting" was developed by them, specifically for belt driven mills. It was much less liable to slipping around the pulleys and therefore made the mills more efficient.

I can't seem to get past a mental picture of a health farm with that Sphincter Grip Hose though! 😮

Good to see a photo of the man himself.
Apparently the so called camel hair belting contained no camel hair, and was used only as a marketing gimmick. One of the many court cases dealt with this very subject.
Great pictures.

Author: reddersthemole.Primarily,despite being away a while,hoping to reconnect with Percy123 about my connection to the family.My parents jobs in wartime evacuated them to Hotels in Southport,and they met there.My father an avid family enthusiast,obviously contacted Frank at nearby Winmarley,pleased to find another Reddaway,and must have got on as he persuaded Frank to attend his wedding as Best Man!So the story goes. When a student at Manchester I was dispatched to Southport to visit Ms Bessie Cheetham,which was interesting. I also think I have a photograph of Lambert.I hope this fills in some bits, John Reddaway
