The amazing thing is that you have got metal mining, underground stone quarrying and natural cave in the same hole. Add to that the surviving archaeology including locos and man riders and it is hard to beat.

I was lucky enough to have a trip in there during the 2006 NAMHO conference and I rate it as one of my all time favourites.

yea I've just been checking the history and images online look stunning but some of the information about the water flow was a tad mental. And after the weekend before last be nice not to be in any stupidly low roofs my back was killing for days after that.

[mod]Have removed a couple posts, apologies to anybody concerned. Am not certain that griping on public forums is really going to achieve much one way or the other.

Cheers.[/mod]

I would be extremely interested in a trip there but I have to say, I'm a trifle sceptical that it will be "any time soon" as the phrase is generally understood. There are too many issues in play and more than one party involved have no real incentive to resolve access for third parties - doing nothing is their obvious option.

United Utilities have had contractors working on the outbye end of the tunnel and one shaft since early summer.
It is currently under working mine status, inspection, manager and all that entails so I doubt there will be access available there.

According to the GCC, it's not. *shrugs*

I suspect you have connections that know exactly what the status is, so I'm inclined to take your word for it that the working mine status is still in force.

To clarify, I believe the working mine status only applies to the lower end of the tunnel but because of forced ventilation needs etc, the whole mine may be affected and so be unavailable.

Gotcha. thanks for that.

It's a great site - I went there over ten years back now, and it was highly memorable.

Speaking as someone who has been involved in negotiating access to a couple of well-preserved underground sites in Surrey, and with conditions imposed by two separate owners, I can say that patience bears rewards. The sites I mention were denied to anyone for about 15 years, and by gentle persuasion that mine explorers are pretty harmless individuals, and take responsibility seriously, access has been possible for over 20 years now.

GCC have spent 5 years telling everyone that they will regain access imminently

I'll believe them when they produce some evidence this is anything but a fairytale

I've missed out on trips here a couple of times 😞

It would be nice to think there was a prospect of a trip at some point.

I did visit part of the workings about 10 years ago but didn't see much, I was working for United Utilities' consultant - possibly related to the present works, they have been giving it varying degrees of consideration for many years

The contrast is a reflection of how this site is properly moderated and respected by its members. Well done Simon and the rest of you.

Well generally speaking I'd put it down to the members. Apart from automatically deleting every second post by Tony Oldham and fixing the odd link very little moderation is actually done across the forum. Substantially less than 1 in a 100 threads cause the admins to wake even momentarily from our slumbers I'd guess...

Ultimately re Milwr the same arguments have arisen sporadically across the various websites now for the last five years and not a thing has changed as a consequence other than general bad will & that is not what this site is for.

And the members respect for the site is down to proper consistent management.... The two go together.

I don't care for all this political and ranting nonsense, its some where I hope to see one day............but as it is I expect I'll have to wait a while...........oh welll
Better to regret something you have done - than to regret something you have not done.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
