I am staying in Eskdale in a fortnight and wondered if anyone can recommend any relatively straight forward places to explore in the area, preferably without need of ropes/SRT. I am a caver but enjoy the grandeur of some of the old mines I have seen (Cwmystwyth, Croesor, Nantymwyn, Olwyn Goch, Cystannog etc)
Cheers me dears

Don't know the area from a mines point-of-view but there's probably some iron mines thereabouts though not certain that there's anything explorable. Lots of slate heading over towards the Langdales & the Coniston area.

Sorry, can't be much help. If there aren't many mines without traveling a bit, the mountains around there more than make up for it!

Try the mine search facility on here perhaps, it's excellent & easy to use.

Thanks RJV. Seems that Conniston Copper mine is the only big mine in the area. I noticed several places marked on the OS map near by but there is no information on them and empty photo albums only. Hesk Fell is a case in point with several admits marked but zero information. Might take a look for the benefit of all.

Of course, if anyone can elaborate on what the area has to offer, I will be happy to hear, either through the forum or via PM.
Thanks
Paul

There are a few entrances on the hill above Boot. There's a superb inclined plane which leads to a couple of adits and further to the west there are some more entrances. A look at the 1:25000 map should find a few more.

The Ravenglass and Eskdale railway was originally built to take the ore. They extended it from where it finishes now across the road to another really productive mine but I haven't had the chance to look at that area yet. Ian Tyler has produced a good book on the mines of the Lake District.

Nab Gill is the one with the inclined plane

I don't know the area personally, looks like there are a few ironstone odds and sods where you might get ten minutes underground.

If you're wanting to see something large, but not bother with SRT, I would suggest the slate quarries on Coniston Old Man.

I grew up in the Lakes, and saw so many mines close around me over the years. There certainly used to be mining in and around Eskdale. I still remember the day they closed the Haig pit in Whitehaven, although it was a coal mine,it was part of our Cumbrian heritage.

Dead right there RJV, and travelling around from Eskdale is oh so slow. Still I had a great time flogging up all those big mountains near by in marvellous weather so did not venture underground in the little there is to see in the Eskdale area. Located a couple of adits on the southern side of the river Esk near the Woolpack pub.

North of the Esk by Boot there were several iron ore adits but they were not walkin type places. The inclined plane recommended by CRICKLEYMAL was excellent and it is clear that a lot of activity took place in that area. The miniature railway that was installed to service the mines was great as a means to travel the valley and was dirt cheap. Would recommend to anyone exploring the Esk valley.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
