I was visiting some friends in Liverpool and went for a walk around Carr Mill lake and then wandered down towards the Sankey Valley nature reserve. I noticed that some of the water draining into the stream was very rusty in several places and found out from the signs around the place that there was iron processing and according to the magic.gov.uk map there are some old shafts in the vicinity of SJ531972. They're not listed in the database on this site. Does anyone know anything about them?

http://maps.nls.uk/view/102344075  site that they are coal mines. I'd still like to know more, I presume there must be iron mines in the area too?

Most of the orange water exiting from the western bank of the brook is is from Laffak colliery which was located on the banking to the west of the stream and towards the houses between sankey valley and the road. Most of the water will be leachate from the pit heap. Ocherous water entering from under the east lancs comes from and shallower workings and crops towards Garswood Park/Billinge an area which has been heavilly opencasted in the past but still the water emerges.

Interesting. The water I saw was coming out of a 3 or 4 ft concrete arch on the east side of the stream about 25 yards from the stream. Probably coming from under the railway.

I also saw some very red water coming out of a field drain on the north side of the Carr Mill Lake which is what made me look around a bit more carefully as I was strolling around.

The water from the concrete pipe comes from under the railway and east lancs. The water originates from in the fields on the carmill side of the road where there are loads of shallow workings as the coal od very close to the surface. An opencast nearby was less than 100 feet deep. The water on the car mill side is again from shallow coal workings.

Thanks. I must have an explore further on down the valley as it follows an old canal as well as a few coal mines
