We were trying to decide what this was on Sunday's trip and the best answer we could come up with was that it was probably a something or other...

Does anybody have a better answer?

Cheers!

Looking through delving in Dinorwig there is a glimpse (page80) there is a glimpse of an iron built cableway tower-i have been told they used both the well known slab built tower ,and iron.Presumably they would be sat on a lower stone foundation.Maybe the cable incline heads above garret had one of both-one stone and one (collapsed) iron.Hope this helps.

I have always (well, since seeing it in 2008) understaood it to be a base for a Blondin Tower.

Although part of me always wonders whether it is substantial enough.
Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

Get over it.

incedentally, some of the cableway installations at Dinorwig never required a tower to gain the necassary clearance. The rock face was used to anchor the main cable and sheave wheel. For example if you look off the footpath in between the A5 andC4 inclines you can see the winder building and above it the sheave wheel block.Fenced off unfortunately...

Is that above the small pit to the left of the path just beyond the power station ventilation shaft?

If i remember correctly it is.Seems to be a popular location with climbers (looking from the footpath, the sheer wall on the left by the winding hut.A reasonably deep pit facing you.,and behind you would be the power station lower reservoir Llyn Peris.etc,.cannot see the pit bottom due to the fence).
