Found a short clip about the Foel Ispri Gold Mine near Dolgellau. Interesting clips showing work underground and the large mill that once stood there.

Is this the same mine you suggested might be a trip sometime?

It is between Dolgellau and Bontddu and is quite high up but overlooks the Dolgellau to Barmouth Road.

There is a nice short walk to the mine called the New Precipice Walk (Not to be confused with the Precipice Walk at Llanfachreth). It uses the route of a former tramway and has been made suitable for wheelchairs. Fantastic views of the Mawddach.

There are a few open levels at the top end. Haven't explored the lower levels yet.

Anybody fancy a look round?

Unfortunately, the levels I've seen in the woods below the tramway are gated.

There are some photos on UECT's web site that indicate fenced but not gated stopes. Mention of gates on some adits but not all?

Merddin - how easy would it be to have a check first?

The levels below the path I explored in 1997. They lead to stopes or falls without an awful lot to see, by and large. The view from the path is bloody good, though, and the sulphide mineralisation on the dumps is impressive!

Cheers - John

Thanks for the info John, from all the feedback it does sound like it's not a full day by any means. Merddin, do you think it's worth a quick reccee some time?

Yeah shall we go and have a look. There are a few adits I know that are open. I haven't seen any gated ones yet so must go and look for them too.

looking at the map there is an ORPA leading up to Foel Ispri Uchaf, so you could drive most of the way up in a 4x4. Leaving just the "level" section of the New Precipice Walk to traverse on foot.

I take my 10 plate Ford Fiesta up to Foel Ispri Uchaf so it probably is quite easy in a 4x4 too.

I've just had a look at Foel Ispri on the UCET site - I think the photos are of the levels above the tramway. I've been in some of them but not crossed the planks as I was on my own.

However, there are a number of levels below the tramway - they are close to the stream that flows down past the building at SH 7057 2010. These levels are not shown on current 1:10,000 map. They had newish-looking gates on them when I was there March 2008 - I think they had been gated to protect bats.

Also, from looking at the map there are a shaft (SH 706 198), levels (SH 706 198 and SH 706 197) and a mill site (SH 707 197) lower down the hill - I've not been to those.

This is Clogau mine not Foel Ispri. It is a gated and currently looks like it is in use...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
