The Environment Agency (EA) are installing a water flow meter in this level. The plan is to leave it in place for at least twelve months in order to measure the water flow. Eventually, there will be a water treatment plant somewhere outside the mine. This is a similar idea to what is happening at Rampgill and Caplecleugh Levels at Nenthead.

EA are interested in knowing roughly where the major water flows are underground. The thinking is that it might be possible to do remedial work on surface to reduce the amount of water entering the mine. For example, there might be a shaft which is taking a lot of surface water.

Nothing scientific, but my impression is that there has always been a steady flow along the level from High Raise Vein and points east under Wellhope. I think that there is a greater water flow along Wellgill cross vein from below Brownley Hill. The significant intake is probably on Scaleburn vein, just east of the Whimsey chamber, where surface water from Gillgill burn comes into the vein here and then drops down to the Brownley Hill connection.

Has anyone got any better information? I am interested in any significant water inflows at the east end of the Brownley Hill veins.

Pete

As I remember it there is not a lot of water entering Brrownley horse level where it meets these veins.
However as mentioned previously there is this curious water retention at the junction of jug horse level and the Brownley one.
It has backed up,on occasions to chest height and yet at other times nothing is there!
The back up is on the main Horse Level, the Jug one is comparitively dry, as are most off the passageways at this end of the mine.

No real ideas. Although as John says there is plainly a large amount of water in the mine particularly at the eastern end of the BH veins & thereabouts it generally appears just to be standing (from memory...) & I can't really recall there being a significant flow to match say that through Hangingshaws or the Caplecleugh Horse Level apart perhaps from running north along the Guddhamgill Burn XV from the direction of Scaleburn.

I think the major input to the water flow into Nentsberry, as Peter has correctly summised comes down through the blockage, adjacent to Bowman's rise on High Raise second Sun Vein, through the broken air pipe.
It is augmented by water flowing in from Guddamgill and Scaleburn Veins which flow down the Gin Hilll shaft. Also water from Brownley Hill Vein, itself allso enters from sumps around the present connection to Nentsberry random HL, on Wellgill Cross Vein.
Of course a significant amount of surface water flows into Nentsberry around the area of the recently dug blockage.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
