Split from LAP's thread about Dinorwic sincs.

I have Delving in Dinorwic, and Dinorwic, the Llanbers Slate Quarry. Both are good books, full of facts and photos...

However neither contains a clear plan that identifies the pits, galleries, general areas and inclines. Some are easy, Garrett, Allt Ddu etc. But others I only know as Mordor, Lost World... 😞 (climbing names for the areas). There are some plans in Delving in Dinorwic, but not an overall one, they are more related to tramways, and the writing is nigh-on impossible to read.

Can anybody recommend a book or source of a plan showing everything in clear detail?

Iirc the little booklet on Dinorwic / Quarry Hunslets that the Slate Museum sells for about Β£3.50 has a decent map of the inclines and so on, but I'm not sure it names the galleries.

I'll dig it out when I get home this evening.

Although Dinorwic, the Llanbers Slate Quarry is a good book, it's utterly hopeless from the point of view of tying together the names in the text with where they actually are in the quarry.

The way I used to make sense of it was by reading books by people like James I C Boyd, and others mentioned in previous replies-although the railways are frequently the main subject, you can (with a little patience) interpret alot of the info about locomotives, inclines etc, and where they worked into a sort of rough understanding of the areas of the quarry.
For example when Boyd (and carrington) talk of locos moving from one gallery to another, sometimes having to dismantle them in the process-Holy War being moved by ariel ropeway as an example.By tying the written info to a map as in Carringtons book,or p86 in Boyds Narrow Guage Railways in North Caernarvonshire,a picture of sorts emerges. If theres a good detailed map out there somewhere it would save alot of time though!

Thanks everyone for all the input.
I looked at the map in Delving in Dinorwig. It's good in that it shows what is there, but not to the extent where we can accuratly say exactly where things are, but it must be one of the only maps around.
Maybe a trip to the slate museum is needed?

One of the published plans (not sure which one off top of head but think it is Slates to Velinheli) has an error on it in that it shows an extra incline on the A side that does not exist.

It would be lovely to see a clear map of the quarry. Trying to decipher what is where from any book I know is a black art.

I have Alun John Richard's books - and the maps could be a lot more helpful. I always seel to be cross-referencing a number with a name in a table and then looking up the description, and the map reference to get a clear idea of where the hell it is.

Slates to Velinheli still seems to have the best plans, see page 6, page 17..... I did a redraw of the inclines replicating the same error which from memory is that there is no A10?.. any way here was my version!

Patience and I'll try and sort out My OS scans. You may have to annotate them yourselves though .... πŸ™‚

OK - first 10 extracts posted as pdfs. These are from the 1914 Edition of the 25in and show just how few mills there were at the time.

There is a fair degree of overlap between the images, I havn't had time to try and tidy this lot up at all.

I did start annotating the original printed map in pencil - so you can see on the images the pencilled Bonc names etc. I also started annotating the images, converting the pencilled names to image text - but didn't get very far.

There's another 9 pdf's to upload which I'll do later on today.

Enjoy

(NB These were taken from a genuine map which I had, not photocopies or otherwise from any archives.)

Simon, John, you are only part way to knowing what a quirkafleeg is  Yes its a screen from Jetset Willy... but the phrase comes from somewhere else... My avatar is the clue! and even then its origin has another twist especially for you simon.

As for the game it was impossible to finish as there was a programme gliche corrected on the PC versions... which I am sad to say I have completed... Manic miner, Jetset Willy and Jetset Will II..... Oh those glorious days in front of the C64 trying to tune the damn tape loader etc.... sigh!

Well, unless I am very much mistaken your avatar is Fat Freddy's Cat - Fat Freddy being one of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers.

So is it drug related?
