It would need some big lads to lift blocks of slate. I tend to think they were used for lifting rails or lengths of pipe (there are some nearbye if its the same place I've seen them) although its only a suggestion.

I too have seen these and wondered about their use.

At first glance I assumed they were for lifting slate blocks by four men. However, the two hooks are far too flimsy for that use. JonK's suggestion makes sense as the hook would wrap round the rail and hook back on it's own chain holding the rail (or pipe) securely. It would still need four men, one on each end of each wooden handle.

it seems a better idia than lifting block but suerly 4 men to lift rail seems a bit odd as you two men could esely carry without to much trouble. Unless there was some more length of chain it could be wraped around severle peces in one go?

I'm sure that this subject and this photo has come up before. I've overheated my little brain trying to think when without success. Can anyone help?
