Was in Ratgoed (Ralltgoed) last weekend with Merddinemrys.

There is an excellent document uploaded by Gwyddno http://www.aditnow.co.uk/documents/Ratgoed-Slate-Mine/Ratgoed-Slate-Mine.pdf  and whilst we didn't have time to explore the lowest two floors we spend a fair bit of time poking Ch 6 on floor 5 (the one with the reflective R). At the back of this chamber is a rope, labelled 2006 which appears to go up about 40 feet or so.

I've not seen any surveys that show anything beyond here, so does anybody know where it leads?

We ran out of time to explore!

I understand JonK is very busy on this area and the Plas IA group were surveying there last summer....

I had heard that yes, his calendar photo is Ratgoed. I suspect that rope might have something to do with Jon and the Plas IA group, it isn't mentioned in the survey we had with us.

Caught red handed at last!

Yes we are exploring in Ratgoed and I ask that people don't f%ck about with the rigging that we have left in. We will be back next weekend. I will upload a section but from detailed exploration of the mine it is clear that there is no obvious route into chambers 9, 10 and 11. We are trying to remedy this. Have attained chamber 9 easily and are making good progress towards 10 and 11.

In August 2009 we installed new 10 mm Hilti anchors so that it is possible for tall people to rig and descend from floor 5 to floor 6 without re-belays or deviations.

Thanks Jon. I had my suspicions when we saw the rope.

I dread to think how you got up there...

Nice photographs as well. Presumably you were the first people there in a good number of decades?

Bolting up a face is not as hard as you think. King Arthur and Myself bolted it in about 4 hours with Ashby belaying. All you need is a good battery drill and bolting kit, two ropes (one static and one dynamic), a couple of etriers, some quick draws and a head for heights. A Petzl Quickfix or two helps a lot.

Its clear that the workings byond have not been visited for many years since there was no modern boot prints or the usual rubbish that most people seem incapable of taking home.

We will try and leave a string in when we are done so that others can pull a rope up and use, the hangers (at their own risk) when we are finished.

Jon

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
