Just watched a Tony Robinson C4 programme, he walked along High Street in the Lakes, and went in an adit, to look at pickmarks that may have been similar to Roman pickmarks. Was this a Roman adit ?
if eight out of ten cats all prefer Whiskas
Do the other two prefer Lesley Judd ?

I wasn't aware of any means of dating pickmarks just by how they look - I missed the programme, did they make the claim that the pickwork was Roman?

I didn't see all the programme but Gill called me in when mention was made of mines! If it is the bit where Ian Tyler is taking Tony Robinson down an adit then I think that I caught a mention of Hartsop Hall Mine as I entered the room. Not one that I know much about, maybe a Lake District expert can comment?

Come closer to retard than expert on any given scale but the obvious 4 or 5 adits I've been in were clearly not roman. There's a few holes higher up which might be open workings or simply where they've stoped out to surface (can't remember sorry!) but have no idea when they are from.

Not a lot of help there obviously!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
