Ah yes, thought it was one and the same. A little bit of digging produces this http://uk.youtube.com/user/Henllan  - someone who's 41 years old if the profile is to be believed...

There is a video of Cwmorthin, http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_3RsDMIMF1A  here, which is nothing short of acutely embarrassing.

Having (briefly) looked at several of these videos, all I can hope is that these people stop posting this nonsense: if there's a surefire way to get landowners to close off access, this is surely it. :curse:

Especially showing themselves hurling large bits of rock into holes in the ground (Hendre clip) ::)
Beyond belief really :stupid:

I think they like to be seen. There is a word for it but I cannot remember what it is.

I can think of several... ::)

The discussion on their forum is interesting http://www.forum.ucet.org.uk/north-wales-f5/spar-mine-lloyd-s-hendre-t8.htm . This from one of the UCET folks:

Quote:

The position is, (as I understand it), that the agents acting for the landowners are very concerned about liability issues and have advised the landowner to seal all the entrances/shafts.

However, one of the landowners (3 brothers?) is a good friend of our current chairman and, instead of sealing the entrances (cost issues perhaps?) has offered UCET the opportunity to "look after" (I don't know what the right term would be) the mine(s) provided that the entrance(s) are gated (limit potential liability) and that the existing fences are repaired at our cost.

As a caving club we are anxious to keep as many caves and mines accessible as possible and for the relatively small cost and work involved (requested by the landowner) we saw it as an equitable arrangement.

Personally, I would always favour having an open access but I do understand the landowners concerns and although we all (UCET club members etc.) carry insurance, not everyone who ventures down might do so.

All I will comment is that I believe that the FoC model, in which the body which "controls" access is not a club and has no members is, to my untrained eye, a preferable model in several ways - not least in that it can not limit access to its "members".

As Simply's link will provide, Cwmorthin is a prime example of a great mine that could have been lost to explorers without the much appreciated efforts of FoC :flowers:
What they have provided is unrestircted access to ALL rather than the selected few and without having your hand held while in there

Regretably I have just watched another one of their vids called UCET Caving News

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6GyimrbZzuA

Amongst other things it shows them sitting in/on a very fragile looking wheeled vehicle. How irresponsible. Seems to match their general behaviour.

I have watched a few of their films. It is entertaining and fair play they have put a lot of time and work into them.
But they do like to show themselves a lot making expressions more than actual features of mines. Anyone will recognise them anywhere including the cars. Might be in the same bracket as perhaps entertainment such as 'little Britain' type of thing etc.
But I don't think it was a good idea of making that type of film at Cwmorthin.

I have watched a couple of their films in th past and thought they were poilt by th goblin rubbish. However, each to their own. Last night I decided to watch a few more as the subject of NCET had come up. However, I gave up on most of them after a while. They seem more interested in the intos with thm pulling silly faces, then going on about goblins, faeries and heaven knows what other rubbish. Okay a joke is fair enough, but it wears thin after the 6th film! It is a shame because it spoils what otherwise could be good footage.

I certainly don't think they are the kind of people who should even be considered for controlling access for any sites (not that I agree with the club access idea anyway).

I've just watched the video of Cwmorthin... oh, dear, oh dear. Forget knife crime, camcorder crime is now offically the worst crime in Britain. That's going to leave me scarred for life. The rotten voiceover is going to haunt my dreams tonight.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
