Nothing more than is in the link.
In fairness there is a suggestion that a fence and warning signs cover liablities (which is absolutely true and more than sufficient)
The enterance is already fenced off and therefor liablity to the owner is taken care of.
It then continues on that a locked steel door and enterance fee are under consideration.

Many, many years of taking interested parties into underground sites (often not cavers as such), and being asked 'what do you charge?' has taught me that the answer 'nothing, but we welcome contributions to upkeep, maintenance etc' actually results in sufficient funds being donated, without the complexity of liability for a service provided etc etc. I suspect the "Friends of Cwmorthin" have an informal policy similar to this?

There is a donations box but it is purely voluntary.
It doesn't raise anything much tbh, litteraly a few quid a month on average.
Most of the funds for Cwmorthin come from online donations and projects such as Simon's calender work.

Anyway back to subject, should UCET decide to charge an entry fee they will suddenly find themselves in a whole world of legal difficulties. An admission fee turns access into something else entirely.

Don't mind the concept of a fence, sign etc but even if they don't charge and gate it, to have to be 'escorted' thru with a club member :thumbdown: :thumbdown:

That's why I asked what the background was. Sounds like a PITA having to accompany anyone interested in visiting - a requirement imposed by a third party?

It may end up being presented as such but it isn't reality.
I know that there is pretty much a competition round that area to see who can cap/gate the most mines,
In many cases the land owner is approached with an offer to secure any holes on his property and take the problem off his hands, even if he didn't know he had a problem in the 1st place.....

Grosvenor split from North Wales Club. UCET split from Grosvenor. I remember some years ago someone from the Grosvenor saying that Mick Murphy was setting something up with some young blood, and I'm assuming this became UCET.

NWCC control the Minera mines, GCC the Milwr, UCET ...

Mick Murphy has indeed done just that starting UCET tho it has been up and running for some time now. myself and a fellow mine explorer were there at Hendre only yesterday. signs have been put in place basically saying danger keep out. however i would find it rather difficult for them to cap and gate this shaft its very big, unless they are going to remove the homemade ladders and gate the very small crawl into it. there are some more interesting ways of getting in anyway if you like srt

Having (briefly) looked at several of these videos, all I can hope is that these people stop posting this nonsense: if there's a surefire way to get landowners to close off access, this is surely it. :curse:

Tell me about it. Far be it for us to advise UCET how to do their business, but if a charge is to be made, and it isn't done with complete transparency with the landowner, I can see a big can of worms being opened.
