Around 2000 I remember a company setting up in Blaenau that was advocating a novel use of slate waste. By super-heating slate waste in a kiln (1100 to 1300 centigrade) a lightweight aggregate was formed, which if I recall correctly could be formed into building blocks.

The company was based near Oakeley in Blaenau (I think).

Does anybody know if it's still going? Or if not what happened to the idea?

I can't find anything on the web other than some IPO information relating to the process.

If nothing else this might make interesting reading for anybody who hadn't come across it.

I' m sure i saw it on company's house webcheck that the company is being wound-up and striked off.

Llechwedd did some research in to this idea many years ago aswell.

That strange kiln contraption in a building on Floor 5?
Not worth the bother I presume?

So it is. And fairly recently as well.

Case Type: VOL. LIQUIDATION MEMBERS
Wind Up Date: 30/04/2008
Dec sol Sworn On: 07/04/2008
Appoint Practitioner: 30/04/2008

Pity, it seemed (although I know nothing about the process itself) a good idea and with plenty of raw material around ;)). I guess the energy costs were vast.

Ah, was that the same process that RHD was involved in, then abandoned when it wasn't going anywhere. Then the other fella went off on his own. When it started to show promise RHD sued other fella as breach of patent. It went to patent court and, as is usual with his court cases, RHD lost!

That's the one. I'm not sure why it was not persued to be honest, it was all abandoned since when i 've been @ llechwedd.

i think there was also some other experiments going on there as well, however it was all kept very quiet and secretive.
