Hi, this site has resolved a thirty year mystery for me. Me and my father did wander what a pit in Penyorsedd was for - today I saw Grahami's picture of it - and he identifies it as a water balance:

Many thanks Grahami. Sadly, I realised a couple of years ago that this now lies under waste from the current workings. Also wonderful to see all those blondins as I remember them.

But then I wondered where the slate is coming from to be lifted. Would I be right in thinking that they would be taken through an edit at the bottom of the main pit to the water balance?

Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

Get over it.

For information this proved a challenging descent a few years ago using the back axle of a transit van as the main belay - I took the keys with me. 160 feet and dry at the bottom but no way into the drainage level. The shaft opens up where it enters the solid rock.

I have a photo somewhere.

The pits all have a lot of fall/fill in them now but they did go down to the drainage levels which took the water into Llyn Nantlle Uchaf.

ah thanks;
Any idea as to whether the levels are still accessible from the reservoir end?

regards
