Interesting photo of an unusual and pretty well preserved remains of a slate dressing machine. Does anyone know whether this had a drum type or a guilotine type of cutting blade? Also a strange thing for the measuring gauge to be on the right hand side which would make operating awkward for right handed people. Anyone seen any photos of this type intact?

I think its the guillotine type - there are some blades lying around iirc.

Yes I would be inclined to agree with you there Merddyn. Went up there ages ago, think I've got some similar photos in the attic. Would be interesting to see a photo of an intact one. I can't say that I have seen this type elsewhere. Probebly because that they have been cleared for scrap when the quarries closed. I would imagine that the location and weight of these relics have helped to save them from scavengers and scrapmen.

It's an example of Amos & Francis Patent Dresser. Patent No. 1884 of 1861. There used to be a few of these set up at the Dinorwic Quarry Museum. The photos below were taken in about 1974.

Thanks for that Graham. It looks very much like the first photo. I will have a good look at the dressing machines when I go to llanberis next month.

All the De winton machines at Golwern have a number on them, one is 112 another 128. Whats the significance?

I would imagine the numbers are the casting number, or an id number. But whatever the original intention of it I would think it would be an advantage in the repair and maintainance as every machine would be identified by it's cast no. And perhaps the men dressing the slate would be resposible for the machine allocated to them.
I think we will have to leave it to our imagination unless someone else has a definitive answer.
But I will have to put Golewern on my list to visit again soon.
