If anyone is visiting Cumbria on their travels, be sure to visit the Haig Colliery Mining Museum. Highly recommended. Not the usual touristy crap and entry is free. Open all year round.

Nice link, thanks Nimrod.

I wonder would it be a good idea to compile a list of mining museums around the country.

Might be of use to people hoping to combine holiday with some family friendly underground time 🙂

Me & Wenders have been a few times. Most recently one rainy Sunday about 5 months ago. We were the only people in there, but they still went to the trouble & expense of starting the compressed air powered winding drum. Quite a sight to see and the guys that are trying to conserve this place wear boilersuits not not uniforms.

Sounds like the sort of place that should be applauded and supported. Unlike certain other establishments...

Definitely think a list of all museums would be worth compiling, then I can add them all to the links page and hopefully send some web site visitors their way.

Perhaps people could suggest a few in their areas? AN is beginning to get some members from the SE and SW as well so we should be able to cover the whole UK. He says 🙂

Just to add to the 'resources' out there, A lot of local museums/visitor information centres have aspects of mining.

For example:
Watchet Museum - iron mines on Brendons.
South Molton- Exmoor mining
Llanidloes-Nice model of headframe and a bit about Van
Aberystwyth, Bog visitor centre, Glenridding tourism information.....etc etc

Is it worth recording these, or is it a step too far?

No, don't think that's a step too far, perhaps as I compile the list (won't be overnight I'm afraid) I could indicate whether the museum is specifically mining or contains an aspect of mining?

I think it's a worthwhile list to compile, but a quick plea 🙂 When submitting any (feel free to use this thread, then it'll build up in one place) could people submit:

Name
Description (one liner)
Web addres

Thanks very much!
