On the Millom side of the estuary is Hodbarrow, one of the richest hematite bodies ever found, on the other side were immensely productive Furness iron mines. It seems logical to assume that beneath the sands of the estuary must lie a huge hematite resource that will never be mined !

I know of someone who used to visit the mines,are they still accessable?

Quite right, near Askam most of the neighboring land has something to do with Iron mining. Walk along the shore at Askam and you'll see flash-pools all over the place. There are also some shafts I believe behind the dumes somewhere. Hodbarrow took up an enormous area of land, protected by a sea wall. This has now flooded and is used for watersports.

Thanks for the replies,I will ask my contact when it was that he went.I assume it was just after closure,or maybe older parts of the workings whilst pumping was still going on.His photos suggest early seventies which would be just after close down.My brother used to have a loco and a couple of wagons from Hodbarrow about that time.
