Have asked this on Drakplaces but thought I'd ask here as well.
Had a little look around top of Rhiwbach at the weekend (see journal on DP)
Does anyone have any recent experience of underground workings at Rhiwbach New Quarry (the twin lakes) and also the nearby 'Craig Howell' adit?
Cheers
Steve

The Craig Howell is at (approx) SH 74100 45900
with the new quarry just southish at 74050 45700.
You have to go over the fence. There is the remains of a building there which can be seen from the path then the adit is obvious.

Anyone any more info on this?
Hope to take a look inside over Easter seen as I'm going to be just down the hill for a longer weekend.

All i can contribute to this is that the 'old' workings have several adits leading to chambering underground, seperate from the better known gated main workings.

If you mean the Craig Howell and Rhiwbach New Quarry?
Well, Craig Howell goes nowhere, just to a flooded incline after about 100 yards.
The Rhiwbach new quarry I think will have more to look at, maybe on at least one other level. Where I got was thru the thick orange sludge and to some water of unknown depth, i suspect waist deep from its relative position to the tunnel roof. But I have seen pics of explorers at lower levels (taken a while ago though)
Will go back sometime with waders and a stick to test the depth. There is mention somewhere of a shaft as well!!

Had a thought the other day. I was always thinking of heading into the water but never thought of going the other way back towards the lakes and the blocked up adit.
I'm convinced there is some sludge free workings down there 😉

I've not explored any of these workings (only explored the main Rhiw Bach workings) but would be really keen to have a look. I like sludge...

Was Craig Howell adit just a drift working, or were there tunnels dug into the same workings?

From what I can recall (not much!) this was just a small working worked by two people. I do have a plan of the workings somewhere.
Not very big though just a couple of chambers on the lower level.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
