Hi Any,

You are quite right, most of the quarry has disappeared beneath rubbish infill, however, the quarry built two relatively long tramways to waste tips, one to the west and one to the north. Some sections of the west tip tramway trackbed still exist and are worth seeking out, but the tramway to the north tip was an altogether more spectacular construction, consisting of a steeply graded reverse curve line built mostly on embankments. The Hunslet loco "Lilla", now resident on the Festiniog railway, was built specially for this railway. The embanked horseshoe curved sections still exists adjacent to the village of Y Fron and along with the Alexandria Quarry line, represents one of the more spectacular "mountain" railways in North Wales. A good view of the mountains behind Dublin from the tip as well. A "must see" loation in my opinion.

Cheers

Alan

Absolutely John, all of the extant trackbeds in the area are visible on Google Earth, which makes for fascinating viewing, especially the lines that radiate out from the Drum-Head at the top of the Bryngwyn incline of the Welsh Highland Railway - I must return soon!!

Cheers

Aha I thank you for that.

I have wondered where the incline drum hear was. Now I can easily locate and visit.

The thing is, the place is used so intensively, it's not actually surprising that this keeps on happening.

I have a customer who used to run two diving charter boats and he would have one or two incidents a year that required airlifts or worse - it's a hazardous sport and if enough people do it frequently enough, the law of averages unfortunately catches up.

True, it goes with the territory.

There have been 2 divers airlifted from Stoney Cove in the last month, and that is the national dive centre, which is quite well organised.

It is easy to get carried away and go a little bit deeper, for a little bit longer, and all you need a a small kit fail and you find yourself in a difficult situation. Dive to the rules and it is a pretty safe sport.

There was a short film on The One Show tonight about Dorothea. They showed some old photographs and film of Dorothea from a Tal y Sarn collection - perhaps the Nantlle site?

http://www.nantlle.com/history-talysarn.htm

They went into the engine house and then went down in the lake - with special permission and plenty of safety measures. Some good footage in the lake.
