Hi Colin - The last people to work Silverband was Waitings Minerals in the late 1990's, after Tommy Craggs opencast the area in the 1980's. I would expect Waitings Minerals will have had to take on the job of reinstatement and responsibilty of the clean up and maintenance of the site and perhaps should have the key to the barrier. There address was Glebe House, Cliburn, Penrith, sorry don't know the number.

Permission to use the private road that goes up from above the Silverband Sheep Fold Gate to the turn off for the Barrier road that may be harder to get, as this road is operated for and by the CAA on the top of Dunfell.

Hi again - Perhaps the CAA (Dunfell) will also hold a key - as there power supply to the Radar systems - runs up through the buildings on Silverband and they will require access for maintenance etc.

Regards

Thanks for that John, knew about the Waitings connection. As regards the so-called private road up to Gt Dun Fell, this road seemed to acquire that status after privatisation of the CAA, however this is a local bone of contention as loads of locals use it and park at Silverband access road junction or the Pennine way juction further up , there is a gate at the Pennine Way junction to prevent vehicle access to the radar station itself. The locals maintain that as they have driven that road on a regular basis it is therefore a "Public Way" and indeed they can show its use by the public for over 50 yrs.

Greetings Colin,

For some time the gate has been open. It may be to do with BT Telco working there. At least I saw them there for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that though the gate was open I saw no one working there. Will check next Thursday and let you know. May I ask if you required the keys to go down the mine?

Went up Thursday, The gate was locked. I have a name of a former manager who as it happens, lives round the corner from me. I will contact him presently.
