Could anyone please provide information on what there is to be seen for the casual walking visitor to Herodsfoot. As far as I can ascertain, all mine buildings are on private land, however information on other mining remains seems contradictory.

The usually reliable Bob Acton states in Around Looe, Polperro & Liskeard "to quote one of the two local historians who have checked through this section of the book for me. It is advisable not to wander off paths anywhere in Herodsfoot woods - they are riddled with old shafts and adits"

However, Roy Starkey writing about Herodsfoot more recently in The Mineralogical Record states "Regarding current underground access, there are no adits, drifts or horizontal entrances of any kind; four of the shafts are still open at the surface (Winsor's shaft, Footway shaft, New shaft, South
Herodsfoot shaft), but whether they are clear to any significant depth is unknown".

I am not asking for underground access information on this open post, if there is, please pm.

Many thanks

Kevin

I took a look several years ago with the landowner. The only thing we found open was a shaft which I descended, however it was solidly blocked about thirty feet down.

Most of the surface remains are on private land.

Afraid I can't recall who the owner was (I am getting old). If I remember rightly he was a mineral collector who brought the mine site because it is one of the best locations for bornonite /cog wheel ore.

Many thanks Rick. You have confirmed what I believed to ba the case.

The owner of the land in the village has an interesting website

The farmhouse and land were up for sale a few years back, sorely tempted but sadly over ruled;D

I don't know who owns the land besides the footpath to Trewen Farm where the lower engine house is sited.

Tresarran Farm holiday cottages in the centre of Herodsfoot are buildings originally associated with the mines. To the rear of the cottages there is a good view of the stack and engine house. You can also get a good view of it up the lane that heads towards Taphouse.
