At the risk of repeating myself ( I thought I'd posted this item -but it seems not?) has anyone some information, plans, rollcall on the reworking of mines adjacent to St Ives during the early years of the 20th century.

A friend of some years has only recently mentioned that his wife worked for the NCB in the NW area offices as a tracer possibly in the early 60's. Interested, I asked her about it and she volunteered some information about mines, underground trips and the going's-on in the office.

Then she also mentioned that her grandfather was Cornish, and had worked at "a mine near St Ives" living "nearby at Cripplesease" which is right in the heart of the Giew Section of St.ICMLtd. Apart from some pics in Bullen's "Mining in Cornwall" Vol 3 I have little 20th century info. His name was Cocking and his brother was cox of the St Ives lifeboat at the time.

As my friend's wife would like to know more about his life and where he worked, and the maps in the NLS website are too early, I wondered if anyone has information about the mine, or knows where to search.

Cyril Noall in Volume Two of the St Ives Mining District has an informative albeit brief section about St Ives Consols during the 19th and 20th centuries including Giew section. I believe Cornwall Records Office has a lot of photographs etc of the later operations centred around Giew.
poke around long enough and you'll find something..

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
