If they are short of rubble they can always dig a hole in the ground to get some... let me think that would need a 15m deep one....;D

Ah, now, well, (putting on cardigan with leather elbow patches and straightening the demi-lunettes) speaking from Pedants' Corner - you have failed to allow for air entrapment within the excavated material. You'd only need out about 14m depth to fill 15m hole. You'd then have to dig a 13.1m hole to fill the 14m, and so on, for about 20 holes, until, hey-presto, no more hole. :smartass:

Never thought of that!! Don't be giving the HSE and the council ideas now!!;D

Couldn't we just fill it with Justin bieber cd's? With him at the bottom?

Em... which would be worse?? Falling down a shaft or falling down a shaft into a heap of Bieber? ;D

Em.. Mr Bieber I believe decided in 2010 to allow his fans to take part in an online poll to decide where he would hold his next concert... result?? An overwhelming vote for him to play Pyongyang... maybe the bottom of this shaft be an acceptable alternative??? πŸ˜‰

Why not use poured molten aluminium to make an interesting sculpture out of the shaft full of Bieber? Like they do with the ant hills?

A wagon load of black powder and a length of safety fuse ought to sort it

It seems the guy, 'experienced walker', didn't just happen to 'drop in' to these workings, but had ventured in via a level in the hillside with torch in hand.
So.....more misadventure than accident

If he was an 'experienced walker' then ;)he should have kept to the footpaths provided. And not poked around in places that he had no knowledge or experience of. Such foolhardy adventures gives the community who know such places well a bad name.

Mr Williams, 51, who lives near Penarth in Wales, said: "There were no barriers at all, and no obvious signs to show danger.

Well no sign of danger other than the fact its an abandoned mine ?

You would have thought living near Penarth he would be well aware of the dangers of mines. 😞

He's calling for all of these areas to be fenced off, and naturally CCC are jumping onto the bandwagon.

Funny how Wheal Hermon is very well known, and yet there have been no previous incidents, until some tourist numpty with no gear decides to go climbing.

The only thing that needs fencing is his house to prevent him from doing anything else terminally stupid.

What an absolute cretin.

He needs to find a bigger mine shaft to throw himself down.

The laws of Natural Selection should have prevailed I think!
He says 'there were no barriers to stop me'; does he not have any commonsense whatsoever? Nothing forced him to enter this mine unprepared except his own stupidity!
I despair and sincerely hope this won't start a massive ball rolling!

This line on the BBC news site is ominous "Cornwall Council says it is working to ensure the entrance "where the accident occurred is secured"."

Sounds like the same old story, he was a fool to go in further than he had equipment for. The first time I found this entrance with my other half we went in as far as the wooden plank and thought no that’s far enough.

So sad if CCC and the NT make yet another mine inaccessible;(

I agree with the statement above about natural selection thats the problem with the world at the moment.

By that argument we should fence off the entire British coastline. Just think of those unprotected cliffs!

The problem here is that mine has gunises which open directly on to the coast path and people wonder in to use them as toilets or just out of curiosity.
A simple barrier that a determined person could climb over, with a notice telling people what the place is and the danger would probably solve the problem.

Protection from accidental entry is the important phrase.

How you can accidentally walk into a entrance is beyond me but the important thing is to put a barrier in place that has to be actively negotiated. The Alston Moor horizontally pivoted gate is a good example, it doesn't prevent people from going into potentially dangerous places but you have to move the gate to do it.

Unfortunately the paranoid will no doubt put security fencing in place to inhibit natural selection processes.
Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
