Hi What was the wheel in this photo used for? Anyone know when the wheel was in operation, I only ask as I have a series of early photos with it in and would like to date them. They came with other Cornish images of 180 or earlier. Look forward to hearing from someone. Malc in sunny Padstow

I am fairly sure that the incline is self acting so in all probability the wheel is not part of the haulage system. If that is the case it is probably driving the pumps which kept the pit dry.

Incline cannot be self-acting as load is hauled upwards. Other photos show steam engine and drumhouse at top. I agree it is probably for pumping.

The map is the territory - especially in chain scale.

My eyes could be deceiving me, but are there a pair of wheels being fed by the launders coming off the base of the obvious wheel?

The 1907 25in OS looks as though there are a total of three wheels in series at this point. The second wheel is just visible under the launder, while the third is somewhat lower, presumably fed from the second wheel discharge.
I guess the upper wheel is a mid backshot, the middle wheel appears fed from the top while the lower is difficult to discern!

A fascinating place

Shows the drumhouse and mill atthe top of the incline - if you register (free) you can zoom in considerably!
There are several photos of Delabole in this collection.
