Does anyone kno of any adits within a hours drive from Barnstaple? I've heard fullabrook mine near west down maybe? I'm not entirely sure on actual location. Or Evan mining ruins above ground and cave systems. I'm finding it very difficult to pinpoint good locations in the north Devon area, your help would be very great full 🙂

There is a trip report for Fullabrook on the WCMS website from 2009 which reports it being very wet in parts and full of scrap cars.

I seem to recall visiting a small iron mine (Spreacombe?) which had drums of chemicals in the entrance.

Possibly not the best area for exploring?

There's stuff at Combe Martin. There's a guy on here who goes by the name "Gary" who will probably know about access etc. Don't think there's much stuff in the Barnstaple area otherwise (though could be wrong!).

Thanks both of you, I have herd it has parts of cars around the mine, but it still sounds interesting Evan if it's to dangerous to enter I would still like to see the surface around the shaft. and as for spreacombe that's sounds like a no go, as for being confronted with barrels of chemicals at the entrance, who knows what's laying down in the adit, sounds to dangerous for my liking, and sorry I should of mentioned I am a member of the Combe Martin silver mine and I volunteer to go down every Sunday and help excavate the shaft I've been doing it for a while now and ide like to see some other shafts, adits or Evan just old pumping stations ect, I am interested in it all, I just don't want to drive to Cornwall to be able to see stuff, I thort I would see if there is anything at all in the north Devon area that's worth exploring, thanks for your help both of you

If you visit the museum at Combe Martin you can get a booklet on the local mines. They have a display showing the location of the local mines.

The Combe Martin Mines by Peter F Claughton1992, revised 2003. 34 pp, illus. SB ÂŁ3.25

Combmartin’s [sic] Dark Depth / a pictorial study of the silver mines by Trevor Dunkerley 2006 28 pp, all pages in colour. SB £6.00

Both bought from the Museum in Combe Martin

At Combe Martin we stopped in a lay-by and filmed and photographed Lester Point Adit and shaft NGR SS 575 475 The adit was obvious, but we could not see the shaft. We searched in vain for West Challacombe Mine and decided that in the end we had the wrong NGR. We found Silver Mines at NGR SS 597 467 marked on OS Explorer map OS9. Well fence off with “Trespassers will be prosecuted” signs, so we made do with a photo of the tower/engine house.

Drove onto Kennisham Hill Mine NGR SS 963 361. From the forestry picnic place, follow the path which goes along the hedge adjacent to the road. About 50 yards from the point where the path veers inland from the hedge, an indistinct path can be seen on the right leading into the forest. This narrow track leads after about 100 yards to a clearing with a flattened mine tip.. An obvious very green fire lane can be seen on the right of the site. This is the end of another way to the mine, namely walking down the hill from the car park to a point about 50 yards past the picnic site, where the other end of this path can be seen on the left. Anne found a nice specimen of malachite. Next was Langham Hill Mine:
NRG SS 976 357

A lot of work has been carried out, stabilising the base of an engine house and wheel pit. As is was raining heavily, we took a few photos and hi tailed it to the Raleigh's Cross Hotel for lunch. This is the site of the Raleigh Mine.

Ok brilliant! Sounds interesting I will defiantly check out the museum on Sunday when I go to the mine, previding it's open on a Sunday afternoon hehe, and about exmoor, yes I've herd there is some up there but I have heard there very unstable, like holes appear in the grounds of exmoor and get fenced off, as much as odd love to see some of the evidence of mining up there, I really wouldn't kno where to start looking

Shaun, this should give you a bit more info about the Exmoor mines, remains are scattered but worth investigating

While I'm writing this, has anyone ever heard of naps cave and quarry? This is supposed to be very close to Combe Martin, but information about the cave/quarry online is scarce, I have found a little bit of info but not much

Nice adit on the edge of the cliff of Great Hangman - The track down to it is about 1 foot from 600+ foot drop... did it some years ago...

Speak with Mitch or Roger.... they know most stuff around that area, and tell Gary D to get in contact with me as I know he's moved...

Ok thanks tin miner, I did hear about the hangman adit, but I wasn't quite sure witch hangman it was, I will defiantly look in to this one as I grew up in Combe Martin and kno the place very well, ok no problem I will let Gary kno you want to get in contact on Sunday, or if you have Facebook I kno he uses that quite regularly but if not I will pass on the message, thank you everyone. Shaun.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
