Speaking to a mate of mine yesterday, he's a digger driver, woz doing some earthworks/clearance etc near Restormal, he found what he described as a high entrance to a mine? from his description it sort of sounds like a lode worked at outcrop or whatever....maybe, also around the same locality he revealed what at first glance looked like an adit, very much overgrown/covered until his digger revealed all, he took a pic on his 'phone of the latter and showed it to me, the top of the portal at least seems to be done in stone work, there's water coming out.

I think he said it was in or maybe near a wood, I asked him the name of the wood but he couldn't remember but as a brief description he told me it was about a mile north or north east of Restormal Castle.

Looking at the maps on this forum I came up with two possibilities, Resperyn Mine and Duke of Cornwall Mine.

Anyone got any further ideas or recognize the said features?

It's Duke of Cornwall Copper Mine, which probably means it belongs to 'Wingnut'; he with the ears like taxi doors. :angel:

Its on private ground and the owners not very receptive to mining types or collerctors. If I remember right he's a bit of a clever dick!

I wouldn't cast accusations Stu, especially when not true...

Don't think so!. Haven't been there for many years and it was heavily overgrown when I did. Dumps with thick cover of scrub and bramble so any shafts may be well hidden. There was an unusual engine house and stack there very similar to Tretoil not too far away.

Slightly off-topic I suppose, but that castle is excellent. I'm surprised it's not better known, what with it's fairly unusual shape and excellent state of preservation (well the curtain wall anyway).
