Hi,
I am a genealogist and currently researching the Wheal Friendship and Wheal Betsy mines as my paternal ancestors all worked in them as far back as I have been able to go so far they have all been miners so im really interested in any information on the mines.....I have read some bits and pieces online and im currently looking through the minutes and ledgers book by mike brown. So any information at all....working conditions, stories, pay, how or where to find the best information would be much appreciated. I would ideally like to map friendship on an up to date map so I can get a better idea as to the size of it.

Thanks
Claire

Hi there,

Welcome to AN,

I havent found ahuge amount of information on friendship/betsy, you have definitely come to the right place though to find any!

If you have access to the Hamilton Jenkin maps this will give you some idea of what is situated where from an above ground perspective, to find any plans of the mine etc you will need to visit a records office.

British Geological Survey by Dines is also a useful book if you are more interested in the underground information.

there are lots of sources on these mines, being working on them for many years. The originals used in Mike's articles are in Plymouth Records Office. Mine plans are held at Devon Records Office or you can get digital copies for a price from the Coal Authority. There was a lot published in the Mining Journal 1870's to early 1880's. Apart from that lots held at for instance Cornwall Records Office (RW Toll collection & other collections) & in private hands.

Miners Dry

Hi. I have just registered. I have owned the land upon which is situated the Miners Dry which was associated with Bennett's Shaft of Wheal Friendship. Perhaps your family members worked this or Kent's Shaft. I have owned the Dry for 4 years and just retired. I am beginning to research its history and look towards conserving it in some way.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh Creeper!!!!!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
