Great photo, could easily be the poster for a 'Heritage at Risk' site/publicity material.

I was there that day too and could barely stand up. The lower engine house, when Botallack was a copper mine, was built in 1835. There was nowhere to build foundations so it was bolted and cemented directly to the Crowns Rocks.

These engine houses appear under a number of guises: Crown Mines, Crowns Mine and other similar. I've spent an awful lot of time researching this place and, so far as I have yet seen (got to qualify the statement!) this has always been the Crowns section of Botallack Mine.

I'll post a picture when I've uploaded to the Botallack folder.

Have you seen the amazing section of the place at the record office?

Some video I took of that day. Has the Crowns and a windspeed of 81mph there!

If that's the one that has the section on one side and a watercolour of the cliff on the back, yes. It even has a count house cat, though a bit out of scale.

Actually there are some engine houses at risk. The pumping house at Wheal Hearle, Pendeen (the one farthest from the road) and also Gurnard's Head Mine are both fragile. The Wheal Hearle house has deteriorated since I surveyed it about seven years ago. Any others we should worry about?

I am now wondering if anything new will be opened up or uncovered anywhere.
I can think of a few places to look.

the seward wall of the western engine shaft at Trewavas has been gradually entered by the sea, there was a request by the National Trust to do a detailed survey but this was deferred by choughs. Even if the whole seaward side went, it is doubtful if it would effect the engine house however.
At Wheal Rose Porthleven there were fragments of a possible engine house surviving at the bottom of the cliff which may now have gone.
There are a lot of adits between there Marazion which were choked by cliff falls &/or storm debris, which could have either become more choked or opened up, all need a look at again. In some areas the cliffs have retreated a fair distance over the last 100 years, eg the cliffs of head where Trebarvah adit comes out & around Wheal Charlotte (St Agnes).

I am aware of Wheal Charlotte, read my 'graphic account' in an old CBMS newsletter!

This collapsed just after my exploits in there but may now have reopened. If so just be careful in there, please dont try to pass my last dig.

I can think of a few places where something 'interesting' may have happened, but dont want them on the general radar.

At Wheal Charlotte was actually thinking about the cliffline in general not anything underground. A section of cliff including some arches & sea caves towards Chapel Porth, shown on the ca 1950 OS 2500 map, has gone sometime since.

We went down engine shaft at Trewavas (old engine) and there is a breach and the shaft is choked at water level. The adit is not very interesting, although there is a wheelbarrow. The "pull in rope" is quite exciting. I think "our man who installed it" will be along shortly.

See from todays paper that sand levels around Penzance are at their lowest level for years, would this suggest a good time to look around Wherry & Long Rock before they come up again. Unusually big spring tides coming next month I believe.
Anyone had a look recently (Pete?)

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
