The new drainage works near to Harriet shaft (Dolcoath) which are part of the CPR roadworks have suddenly hit a deeper patch.
Perhaps the they have now dug 15 to 20ft down from the surface between Harriets and Dunkin Garden's shaft.
Not sure if they are trying to uncover the shallow adit system or whether they have hit it, but they are digging deep. Worth a visit just to see what they are doing (it is surrounded by security fencing).
Have got some mobile phone photos (Now on Dolcoath site photos), but couldn't get close enough to see down the deep part.

Hello. I was something to do with this.

Between Dunkin's Garden shaft and Harriet, there is a pinch where the open space narrows. As you look at the engine house with Crofty behind you, on your left there is an old shaft which is filled and on your right there is a hole about 8ft across at about 6ft down. It took all of the drill cuttings which suggested something quite extensive. Off the top of my head, this is right on the outcrop of main lode. We assayed some of the cuttings which ran at 2.5% SnO2. There were other works which opened up a while ago but didn't open into anything interesting.

It is in the vicinity of the underground waterwheels, which would be interesting to see. Sadly, due to the methods of those behind the project, anything which does get opened up will be sealed quicker than you can click your fingers.

Looking at your pics, they are stripping the soil off to look for features and digging up things which look suspect. They are looking at a feature there...it's not in the same place as the shaft on the plan, but it could be another unrecorded one. Either way, it is out in the hangingwall by about 50ft....

Thanks for this info.

I would hope the Cornwall archaeological unit have been informed before too much is covered over.
From what the owner of the land next door (Elim Church) said this is just for drainage works for the new roads, although I have yet to easily find plans on the planning websites. The depth would suggest some exploration is going on and it would be good to know that anything found is documented. At the very least, I would have thought they would have consulted South Crofty if they (Crofty) are still in a position to look at these things.

must admit the race track is coming along well !!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
