I think the problem lies in the disparate nature of the Cornwall /West Devon World Heritage Site.

Most WHS are single sites such as Kew or Stonehenge. Whilst a supermarket at Stonehenge would completely ****** it up that is not the case with Cornwall/ West Devon which comprises multiple sites.

There are certain key components within the WHS which should be inviolate, the engine houses on the cliff at Botallack springs to mind. there are other components which, whilst important, are of lesser value and a degree of change or alteration should be permissible after due consideration.

If the Cornwall /West Devon WHS is too flourish (or even survive) UNESCO needs to recognise this essential difference.

Do we need another supermarket though? Yes it provides jobs but I would prefer more affordable housing (someone needs a second home to live in!)

WHS status is more trouble than it is worth, another bunch of unelected nobodies, who have no clue of the area - most have never even visited the area, making proclamations about what we can and can't do. At the same time, what most people don't realise is they have lost their permitted development rights on their own properties.

Have to say the proposed development looks pretty ugly, I suggest they go back to the drawing board (sorry, CAD station). Turning Cornwall into a museum helps no one. Gloucestershire has a well known yoghurt-weaving industry, but despite this, work-a-day life, tweeness and horseyculture to name some somehow rub along.

I'm sure that if these 'planners' used a little noodle, they could come up with something that looks and 'feels' right for the site.
Design the exterior to mimic what was wantonly destroyed and have the interior all Tesco or M&S or whatever. This has worked (to a degree) in Chester, so why not here?
People would accept that rather than something that shouts out "Look at me, I'm a supermarket!" Come on, let's see some innovation!

The planners down here have some pretty strange ideas, as an example the new WPD depot in Pool was given planning permission after the planners were told tell us what you want and you can have it.

Didn't some pratt sanction the pulling down of one of the Harveys buildings a few years ago?
