i came across this interesting relic the other day i beleave its a furnace shaft tower for haigh hall colliery near aspull, its not in the best of condition and im assuming the shafts not been filled as theres no access doors to it apart from a small hatch 2ft by 2ft,i havnt managed to find any info on it so far on the great info super highway,anyone know if im correct.

I think it was the chimney for the foundry by Haigh Hall. It was built up there to take the smoke away from the hall area.

finaly found a snippet about it.

This is Wall Hey Furnace Pit, Haigh, Wigan. An underground furnace provided the air current via this upcast shaft for the nearby Crawford Pits at Aspull.
it appears there is a second shaft tower remaining from Patchcroft Pit, Haigh, Wigan of similar design.
found a nice list of pits in the area after saying i couldnt....
