I'd love to know what the events actually are, may pop down to see....

Why am I getting a script warning when loading this page.
It warns my PC may run slow or be unresponsive. My Java is up to date.....Puzzled

don't know. Link works for me... you could just google "International Mining Games", that's all I did

Fine for me too, and I'm running on a finicky system that complains a lot if something is not exactly right.

Roy, I got the same warning when I opened the web page in IE8, but when I tried Firefox it worked perfectly..

Wish I could be there to see it actually, but not going down till the week after....
The management thanks you for your co operation.

No mention of the famous bottle match!
Most games I remember CSM friends playing normally involved home brewed beer in some capacity 😉

and there is the answer to all of your questions, IE8

Go to Microsoft and download the latest IE9.

Surely CSM could have come up with events that needed a bit more thought than cutting a 6in post with a bow saw.

I think you#ll find that the events are stipulated by the rules of the competition not the host. A bit like the host of the Olympics can't change the events.

Correct, IE8 on XP, i would suggest using Firefox or Chrome as they are both better browsers

the Mining Games have a long and sporadic association with CSM. In my days there, they didn't exist.

It seems to be a mainly American invention with limited but enthusiastic participation from Australia. Considering that these are the countries which gave the world such sporting classics as Ultimate Frisbee and Dwarf Tossing, I suppose I shouldn't be greatly surprised.

The events seem to consist largely of things which haven't been done in real-world mining for decades.

Cutting a 6-inch post with a bow saw may not take much thought, but it certainly takes a high degree of preparation; it is bloody hard work.

Knowing the American fanaticism for obscure sports and the Australian culture of competitive sports, I wish CSM well in their efforts...

Other than the Old surveying dial and cutting a hole with a chisel, all the other are still being done, abeit not in ultra modern mines,
Cramping a pair of rails and gauging to sleepers is hardly degree material, now laying a partin and jimming the turn rails, that would get the brain thinking,

Whats this High degree of preparation needed for sawing a 6in post?
If it becomes hard work cutting a post, one needs to set the saw,or get a new blade.

I would be interested to see how the current generation of CSM students cope with such things. The British ex-pats, Australians and South Africans in their mid-20s, drop-outs from NCB courses, and other odds and sods who made up a fair section of the student body in my day are long gone.

Likewise that a high proportion of British students then had varying experience of casual work in the local mines, in the gypsum or salt sectors, the Peak District quarries, roughnecking on drilling rigs or other such experience.

For that matter, Ron Hooper still taught the use of the miners' dial, vernier theodolite and a few other such hippogriffs, although even then your chances of seeing one in use were pretty slim ( although mechanical theodolites were still the norm and taping in catenary still done on occasions. You'd probably have to go to Boulby or some such gassy mine to see it now. )

Certainly 12 years ago the norm was to use tape and vintage manual theodolite (Glass vernier scales as opposed to digital readouts). The only section we were permitted to use an edm on was a section at the test mine where the tunnel was unstable and as such access was not allowed - so you would just shoot through with the EDM.

I would be very surprised if we were not using the same equipment that you were Derrickman!

Anyway I have Agricola to thank for that one!

Actually they work perfectly well, it's just that they take a little bit longer and need more practice.

As well as the games, it was a good opportunity for those old and young to share their common interest of mining...All you ex CSM students would have loved it (on tomorrow) as well.

The Guys at King Edward have big plans for the place if they can get funding.

Despite telling my son Rock drills are a little quieter now than they used to be, he couldn't stand the noise...

Caught the end of todays games at the main site, spent the day at the test mine helping with some stuff(non games related) and watching the survey teams come in and out whilst avoiding plumbbobs hanging from the roof and mad surveying teams running around, does seem the teams were put under alot of pressure with calculation times
