noticed this wonderful ivy covered engine house on a stomp with the trustee hound. The lovely lady in the house up the lane, told me that it was called Smith's Shaft and part of a series of mines. Please would anybody have any further info for me? many thanks.....

Yep. A load of the usual suspects dropped the shaft (which is away from the winding house) back in the day. It had a concrete collar and was pretty deep. I gather there were some tunnels which went to a blockage and a pile of porno mags at the bottom.

I have a feeling an adit has blocked and the whole lot is backed right up with water. I think the shaft has been capped but will be somewhere in front of the engine house (probably in the 10's of ft).

Check out the chain ladders! Forget all this fire brigade risk assessment bullshizzle.

I like the photo

Some years ago when I good friend lived in Treskillard, we went and looked at the little engine house and the shaft infront of it. If my memory serves me right, the water level was only about 30ft below surface.

I have a good set of plans of the area. :smartass:
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

I saw from the CAU reports on the plugging/grilling of the shafts in the area that Daubuz Shaft was to be grilled and had a level off at 150ft below the collar into an adit. Water was about 6ft down from this. Armed with my bramble proof wax jacket, I fought my way through blackthorns barbed wire and brambles, I was very disappointed to see the water level about 20ft down.

Major adit blockage I reckon.

However, I recall Roy saying that they went back to one up there and the water had "gone" to several hundred feet!

Not sure if it's just a load of adit, or whether there are workings in the area. If I recall, it's mostly deep up there....

The shaft we went to was on South Wh Frances, lined with concrete for about 40 feet? and covered over with a rather heavy piece of boiler plate. It didn't go to anything but the magazines at the bottom were most enlightening

Curiously, this shaft did not appear on any maps and has since been erased from the landscape without even a marker to say it was there at all. I'm glad I took some pictures
