Hi all,

I was walking from Levant to Botallack this week, and came across what is apparently an adit just above the path which leads from the calciner building at Botallack down to the Crowns, heading into the cliff approximately in the direction of Allen's shaft from what I can make out. It's readily accessible from the path with no climbing necessary, and seems to be substantially deep (in the sense of long), though a quick net search didn't yield much about it!

I was just wondering if any of you folk on here know any more, such as where it goes, any history and if it's safe to explore? There hasn't been any effort to block it off, and there are plenty of footprints in the mud going in and out, but then in Penwith (such things are normally grilled over in Camborne/Redruth mines) that doesn't necessarily mean it's safe... ;)

if its the one im thinking of it gos to a fall of ground and in winter i can fill with water not worth getting wet for but a nice little walk when its dry

This adit is probably on Hazard lode & may have connected to Allen's Shaft as a level at about that level is shown on a 1914 section (MRO). I never saw that level when in the shaft when it had been refurbished by contractors for Geevor. Would strongly recommend contacting St Just Mines Research Group for this sort of query about the area rather than putting requests on an open forum such as this, as it can potentially generate all sorts of access problems otherwise.

No Ally, its not that one which is much lower down.
Dave said just above the path, it has a prominent entrance and just leads to a forhead after about 10 metres.

It perfectly safe, except when its been used as a toilet.

There is a closing line that comes to mind, I ---- thee not.
