I'd have had a stab at long-exposure and cloud bouncing light from a town behind the engine shaft, but the stars don't show much movement, which makes a long exposure less likely?

It is indeed a long exposure shot. They are usually 2-3 minutes long, locked off on a tripod.
This particular shot, had a full moon illuminating the buildings from behind me, then, fortuitously, the clouds were blowing towards me from behind the engine house - indeed, illuminated by the light pollution from Camborne!
The only thing I do with it in Photoshop is adjust the levels, add a border and the watermark at the bottom. It isn't a filter or anything like that!
