I have recently been touring Cornish mining sites and came across Terras ( Wheal Blencowe ? ) just south of St Stephen with its smalll open quarry and an engine house converted to a residential house. The engine house seems to be unusual in that there is no evidence that it ever had a steam engine installed --Is this correct ? Can anybody advise me ? Thanks

According to the Royal Cornwall Gazette 26th of Sept 1874 - Terras Mine had a 50" inch pumping engine and a 22" rotary stamps engine for sale, the mine having closed the month before...

Thanks ICLOK , one assumes therefore that it is the house for the 50 '' pumping engine that still stands, although it did not seem a very big house for a 50'' engine .
At a guess the stamps engine may have been immediately adjacent to the north / east side of the pumping house as there are the remains of fairly substantial walls immediately next to the pump house . If this is not the case then the stamps engine house has completely disappeared, possibly the granite blocks from the stamps house have been used to build up the bob wall of the engine house to convert it to a residential house , certainly the conversion has been very welll done many many years ago.

I'm now advised this is infact Wheal Blencowe so will need to check the engine house out again.

I was having a poke around a while ago down here and there is a shaft down in the valley, roughly in front of the engine house which is a massive rubbish filled pit. The engine house side of the shaft has a base of a wall which could be the gubbins to mount an angle bob. Due to it's proximity to the road, it's unlikely there was an engine house there, but at a long shot, it's possible the flat rods ran over the road.

Or I could be totally and utterly wrong.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
