Hi Guy's

Just started mine exploration, me and a couple of mates local to St Just have started to explore some of the many adits around the st just area.

We have been down several adits but due to lack of knowledge and equipment have not ventured beyond a couple of hundred metres in.

We have visited Belan, Wheal Herman, Botallack incline shaft and several shorter adits up the cott valley.

We are planning to visit some of the adits higher up the cliffs at the botallack mine sett, to the left (looking out to sea) of the crown engine houses, we have climbed up to the adit openings but the tide started to come. has anyone been down these and are they blocked any real serious hazards, ie false floors, winzes stoping?

We fancy exploring belan, is there anyone we can talk to that would like to take us down there?

Any help or advice would be great.

Regards Olly 😉

I spend a lot of time dangling down holes in the copper district, but sometime get down that way.

It's probably a good idea to get hooked up with some people who are familiar with the score.

There are a few bunches of people poking around and most of them know each other/cross paths/share trips.

As far as I know there is the "St Just mines research group" who are out and about (I haven't met them, but some of my lot have been out with them, good bunch of blokes, I gather).

On mine explorer there are a good bunch of blokes "the carbis bay crew" who are out and about a lot of weekends. They are keen to get people on ropes, are patient, safe and are up to some interesting things. They spend a lot of time in the Hayle/North Cliffs/St Ives/Mounts Bay area and are well worth contacting..... since they rarely post here.

Remember that most bits of abandoned scrubland do have owners and some can get exceedingly angry/unreasonable. I am also aware that the police happened upon some chaps who had rigged a shaft on the coast path and got quite upset/serious. There is a lot of info from a lot of people poking around and it's good to tap into that. Some people will say "come in and look at my plans/artifacts".

It's a great thing to get into and there are some great people involved in doing it.

doesn't one of those tidal adits at Botallack connect with Allen's Shaft? 😢
''the stopes soared beyond the range of our caplamps' - David Bick...... How times change .... oh, I don't know, I've still got a lamp like that.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
