this image was from a friend of my grandfathers collection and only just came across it, not sure where it is but i'm pretty sure its Cornwall (he spend most of his life around liskeard).

wondering if anyone might shed any light on it. very iteresting that there seems to be an aerial rope-way above too.

It's got something Calstocky about it.

It's nothing to do with the construction of the viaduct, is it?

hmmm I'll grant it looks similar but i'm not so sure.

scoggan, i assume you mean on this page? http://www.history.uk.com/history/building-calstock-viaduct
if so i would say the jury is still out! any other pics that I've not found yet that would shed any light?

i would like to add that the picture is an original glass plate negative so would be right for the period in question here of 1900-1910

cheers

Here is the Frith image of Calstock from 1903. Look closely and you will see the same buildings, except that in the photo posted above it is reversed!

I am looking at both with no preconceptions of where they are. the photos are the same place, the ropeway is exactly where they were building the viaduct, and your photo is printed the wrong way around.... Unless, the Frith photo is not Calstock or has been printed in reverse! (unlikely).

As a Tamar Valley resident of old, I'd be pretty sure, along with those others who have offeren an opinion, that the view is indeed of Calstock during the construction of the viaduct. Out of sight on the left beyond the staging is the yard where the concrete blocks for the viaduct were cast, and the photograph is taken from the ore stockyard where the East Cornwall Mineral Railway quayside sidings fanned out. At the time of the photograph, these could still have been in use, albeit I suspect at nowhere near the capacity of previous decades.

Kind regards

Alec
