Cornwall Council has bought a quarry at a cost of £1m.

The Castle-an-Dinas quarry, at Ludgvan, near Penzance, was formerly owned by Castle Granite Ltd, which went into administration in April.

The council said the move secured 12 jobs and guaranteed supplies of granite for building and road works aggregates.

It added that the move made financial sense, as its highways service alone bought about 100,000 tonnes of bitumin every year, costing about £4.5m.

good to see some money spent on something which makes a bit more sense... stand by for two bus-loads of touchy-feely diversity outeach co-ordinators and other sundry Guardian readers and tree-huggers!

It seems a quarry is not the most unusual purchase made by a local authority. Last year Portsmouth City Council spent an estimated £2 million to take over the UK's biggest banana importer based in the area.

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Ah well at least they didn't get involved when the Redruth Brewery went down some years ago, obviously taking heed of the often quoted saying about council officers and breweries 😉

I suspect Cornwall Council had worked out that bringing in granite from abroad when you're sat on top of the stuff and a local business supplying it has just closed down might not be considered favourably by the electorate....
