They have tidied up this site very effectively, but as always the complaints will roll in as it yet another congregation point for the Pengegon late night drinking & socialising community.
I guess some of the bungallows that surround it are built on top of some of the capped shafts.
Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

Were there many capped shafts in the immediate area apart from engine shaft? I understand that the area was pretty extensively surveyed,

That area is full of old shafts, including those of Wheal Gons and Wheal Harriot.

This is the OS 6" map from that area it shows engine houses and shafts.
The problem is that that whole area has been worked from times before proper shaft mining, so anything could turn up anywhere.....and generally does! :blink:

I believe the bungallows were built probably in the 1970's, as I remember visiting a friend in Park lane in the early 80's and they were there then. ie. Surveying for shafts was not a major requirement back then. As an aside has anyone else noticed the WHS GIS mapping site is not working anymore?
Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

to tell the truth, I prefer these engine houses in the '18th C Romantic' style !

the brambles and undergrowth keep the vandals, dossers and teenage cider-drinkers away, and they are not like a castle or country-house - the best effect is from a moderate distance and the ivy and bushes are quite scenic in themselves.

I've always thought that one would make the basis of a really striking house conversion, like the windmills you occasionally see in East Anglia, but I've never seen one done; anyone?

There are some engine houses that have been converted to dwellings and I seem to remember someone posting pics on here (ICLOK?)

There are about half a dozen conversion sin Cornwall, icluding Wheal Rose, Wheal Enys (Porkellis), Porthtowan Beach, one in Marazion and one near St Austell.

I know the builder that done some of the conversions, including his own that he lives in and it is fantastic!

I take your point. A BGS report for the whole area in 1990 tends to support this view.
"Ground instability is also locally compounded by past mining operations in loads and stockworks close to surface. Records for many of the larger and more recent mines are available for consultation, but there are none for earlier shallow and potentially more unstable mining operations".

There are far more than that, these are some that come to mind but I'm sure there are others.
Wheal Rose, Wheal Enys, Wheal Towan, Tregurtha Downs,
Fowey Cosols 2, Wheal Langford, Princess of Wales, Wheal Andrew, Wheal Blanco, Cothele Consols, East Rand, South Phoenix converted to a visitor centre, two more at Wheal Langford have planning permission.
Also since 1950 about sixty have been demolished.

I regard all of this pretty pointless. A stockwork for instance is on the surface. Records referring to modern or recent larger mines would be to say the least sketchy as to any workings above adit.
