another long-dormant question... is the Boscawen Diagonal shaft accessible at all? I haven't been there for years, but I remember being told that it was possible to enter the shaft; how this would be, I don't know, seems very isolated location.

Enter the shaft, yes.
Get anywhere, no.

Sorry for short answers, nothing else I can add.

how do you get there? I don't remember any way down... I assume it just slopes down to sea level

Blocked by falls, and ropes needed to get there.

It’s a familiar tale, the Wheal Edward incline shaft to the south west is the same.

Accessible working from Pendeen going south west
Wheal Hazard, accessible from shore, tide discipline. Climb down under lower Crowns engine house.
Grylls Bunny, easy
Cargodna Adit, descend what used to be Looe Warren, bear left, rope for final drop to shore. Cuts Cargodna Shaft
Wheal Edward upper adit, 20 foot SRT to workings, more SRT if you have death wish
Wheal Castle, canoe or path of death leading to 50 foot of rope work then a climb up. Not worth effort.
Porth Ledden, steel ‘gated’ adit leads to dodgy climb up, best done from other entrances
Ditto, climb up to adit driven in 1910, connected with Cape Cornwall mine, currently blocked by fall, I think.
Cape Cornwall Mine (Out on cliffs, southern flank of Cape Cornwall) Bricked up and a difficult climb to reach it anyway
Priests Cove. Several open adits, main one leads into workings to emerge on other side, see above.

Should be enough here to keep you going.

going somewhere else, by the sounds of that....... 😞 no wonder I've never been down any of them

what is the current state of the cligga head adits? I did hear some years ago that they were fallen in

Is it still possible to do the through trip from the Priests Cove adit?
I'm down there next month and wouldn't mind a look...
Cheers!

Cligga Head adits all open but a partial collapse of the cliff path to the cove means great care needed using this.

Priests Cove through trip was blocked by a fall last year, it may or may not have been dug by now. It was in a place where falls are frequent and usually easily dug.

This is to the best of my knowledge at this time, I will be down there Spring Bank Holiday. I stay at Wheal Andrew Engine House nr Twelveheads if anyone around.

I was down at Cligga about 3 weeks ago and Roy is right in saying that part of the cliff path is beginning to crumble.
However! there is another route nearby that is much much safer.
Once you are down on the large flat grassy bit, you can look down into the cove and ordinarily you would proceed to your left. Go right instead and you'll find an ancient miners path which has small footholes / steps cut into the granite in places.
A far better route by far, especially if you are carrying kit.
The adits are all in good fettle and there has been no movement in the big stope either.

I've just returned from my annual trip to Perranporth and walked the coastal path from Perranporth to St Agnes, on the way, I am sure around Cligga i came across a well preserved adit in the cliff. It has a well built arched entranceway, not having required kit but walking boots I only ventured a few feet in.
Is this accessible or blocked further in can anyone tell me?

Can I have a map reference please.
Not wanting to be wet rag but but "arched entranceway" sounds like an explosive store, or something to do with the non mining works at Cligga.

Is this right by the path between Cligga and Perranporth? Jsut down from the cligga workings....

If it is, it goes about 80ft to an end.

Apologies for the lack of reply on my part and for grave digging such an old post!
I shall be returning to Perranporth in June, I shall take a photo and note grid refs.

But the question would appear to have been answered by Stuey, yes it is on the path between Cligga and Perranporth, so likely we are discussing the same one.

Just out of interest, where is Contact shaft at Cligga on surface?

Is it the big choked shaft by the mill or is it elsewhere in the mill area?

contact shaft has bee capped with a mesh thing and filled so you have to use the adits .can remember the first time in cligga with the sun light coming down the shaft (god makes me feel old!!)

So it is the fenced shaft by the mill with the clwyd cone and infill then?

I take it that the 'cap' isnt a permanent type? As I thought Contact shaft was a pretty important shaft in the future mining scheme of things.

yea it could be uncaped if required also there is talk of reworking cliga we will see!

On the topic of Cligga, I thought that Contact Shaft has a concrete slab over the top of it. It's about the highest point of all the concrete stuff there.

That's how I understand it anyway.

There are other shafts in the immediate area and one of them is just inside the airfield. The one with the Clwyd cap is over the old men's workings. (I think)

the concrete thing your on about is i think the winder base ,if you look at old photos of cligga you can see the dirt was tiped more or less into the mill.
the old mens workings shaft is a few hundred feet away if i remember right may be wrong!
