Thanks for uploading this, when I was there 10 years ago this appeared blocked with scrap and timber.... I had wondered if the shaft had run in... what sort of nick is the engine house in now?

Both the engine house's are still standing but very overgrown with ivy etc. As for the shaft, there are two in close proximity but I was not prepared to get too close to either as I was on my own. They are some distance south of the engines houses in forestry.

Herodscoombe on the other side of the valley is now fenced off and looking very sad.

These mines deserve better treatment...but remain hidden to all but those in the know.

think the shaft your talking about is the one by the engine house ian, yes? these are a little downslope and off to the south.
stone linned too so should be fairly stable!

That the one mate.... full of crap when I was there. Must admit these engine houses warrant attention purely for their location.

Hope you well IC 🙂

There are adit levels there. If I remember the ground is very poor blue clayey stuff. Probably run in.... Only one way to find out though....

no adits that even have a definite location let alone are accessible as fare as i know but the shafts look clear and the geology is good hard killas mostly, so might not be run in!

Ive no knowledge of any adits...so much forestry work gone on that if there were any i think they have all been blocked many years ago.
The area was renowned for its fine mineral samples and the ground if full of quartz (go see Duloe Stone Circle)..I would think a visit underground could be interesting.
I would be interested in going down but am not that experienced..or fit! Climbing out of Stowe's about 20 years ago I vowed never to enter a mine again unless it was all done without ropes.

I would counsel some caution here in that sometimes the stone ginging is supported on timbers that are in turn supported by steel pegs driven into the rock. The timbers can become quite rotten so the whole lot gives way.
I descended on in mid Wales just like this, (Esgair Fraith) and was glad to get back up. The timbers were quite hefty but I could stick my hand through them. It will certainly all go soon.

My avatar is a poor likeness.
