I came across a copy of an aerial photo taken in 1926 of St Euny Church today. Unfortunately very poor quality. But if you look closely at the top right hand corner (south east edge of the graveyard) you can see what appears to be an isolated shaft. Does anyone know any shafts in this area and what mine it would have served? I suspect whatever it is is now under a bungalow estate.

Sheet 63NE. There is a line of shafts extending in "that direction" from the church. That shaft is the most westerly on a line belonging to E Carn Brea mine, rather than Wheal Uny. Interesting stuff!

You can probably find it on the now awful old-maps.co.uk

I agree with your obs Stu. E.Carn Brea without a doubt. It was maybe twenty five years ago that the last of those shafts was capped.
Just as an aside to Stu, on the subject of raised beaches; another raised beach was discovered at Redruth Cricket club when the foundations for the stands were being excavated about 15 years ago. :offtopic: :surrender: :surrender:

Thanks for that stuey. Fits in because I believe there is a capped shaft in the south east corner of the graveyard that surrounds the church. Just to slip into pedantic mode for a sec. did you mean the most easterly?

The shaft you are looking for is just the other side of the railway close to where it says 'Engine Houses'. đŸ˜‰

Just out of interest, how are they capped?

Plug, lidded or sollars/fill and cone?

Plugged I imagine.........

Edit:- I mean the one that is by TO of Church Town....

Most definitely plugged. Maybe a little crudely done by todays standards but good enough to outlast us.

I used to use the footpath regularly to get from Trevingey out onto Uny Downs near No2 shaft of Wh,Uny and they were inaccessible back then (30yrs ago). I'm just waiting for an unmarked one to open up in the corner of a field or bit of wasteland somewhere close to here.

The 1888 maps seem to have a lot more shafts marked on them than the later issues. This is a proper cause for concern. I shudder to think about the dodgy ground that I may have stood on in search of remains... and that one day, I might not be so lucky.

I've seen a few that are in the process of going down... they usually get filled with something before they break through totally.... one of interest is where you took the photo of that whim plat stone, Roy. (I need to have a look for an adit there)

I'm still very much doing all my poking in stuff drained by the county adit. Or within about 200M of it.

Just like I'm doing a big log of everything that's open, where it goes and what state it's in, I would be interested in Redruth next. There are very much still places to look and when I get around to it, I will. :offtopic:

I still haven't been down Uny yet. One of the classic trips that I've yet to do... that and Bellan.

Anyway. Carnkie, I'm assuming that you don't have a copy of the Hamilton Jenkin maps.... They are a worthy companion if you do your poking around outdoors.... I wonder if his book on the interpretation of stuff around Redruth has anything of interest....

Anyway....as you were đŸ˜‰

I'm not sure it is Roy.

About as close as I can get on GE.

Looking at the map, you're a field out.

The rectory is behind the church.....

Look at the map again. The shaft in the postcard is by itself, not one of 2. Looking at the GE shot, it is totally obliterated.

The one you've found is among the group of 2.

Which adit system is it on? Amazing how it's been built on....

Edit:-

You can see the trapaezoid field swell and the shaft is in the bottom right corner of the next one.....Jeez, your map reading is shocking đŸ˜‰

Yeah...OK!... I just supersized Malcolms pic and dug out my other specs, (myopic old b*st**d I hear you mutter), and of course the shaft is in the top corner and not where I mistakenly placed it. For some reason I was seeing the cemetry as some other feature. There was some subsidence at the tennis courts near the top of Trevingey Road a few years ago (less than ten), which would equate to the shaft near the word Sentry, just below Wheal Union. Now there's a place that would be good to get into... Mind you, the adit should still be traceable. Somewhere I have detailed plans...... ::)
