Hey Carnkie with the greatest repect it's all well and good sticking up these Dartmoor Mines, but where's the information and photgrpahs of them?

I could sit here and upload just the names of over 7,000 mines of Devon & Cornwall, but in my opinion that would be silly.

I'm all for listing mines on forums, but if someone wished to visit or browse the photo album before hand they're not going to acquire any useful info on them.

If research was undertaken regarding Brimpts Tin Mine you would have come across the Dartmoor Tinworking Research Group who run the trail over both the North & South mines. The group have undertaken a lot of work there in clearing and securing the site for visitors to walk over at their own leisure. There is a very interesting book on Brimpts and a trail guide. If anyone would like more info please PM me.

Regarding the other sites of Gobbet, Henroost and Hooten Wheels. These mines are well documented and many newspaper article relate to them.

Carnkie - with you living in Cornwall it maybe easier for you to visit Truro Records Office and photograph the information they hold and upload a version in the respective listings.

Regards TM

Hi Tin Miner

I think that's a little harsh.

Firstly, if you visit Carnkie's profile page http://www.aditnow.co.uk/profile/?uid=272  you'll see just what a good job he does adding content to this site. A job I will add that has the appreciation of everybody on here.

Secondly, adding the mines themselves is just as valid as adding information to a mine already in the database. It'll only been a matter of time before somebody comes along and starts adding photographs and documents.

Thirdly, Carnkie is one of very few people who adds detailed and informative descriptions of the mines.

I do agree that these mines need populating with photographs and documents (but that's not something anybody can force people to do) but having the mines themselves recorded, with such detailed descriptions is just as valid a contribution.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Sorry about that Tin Miner but I didn't set out to research those mines. Came across them by accident whilst looking for something else so I just popped them in the data base.

Regarding the CRO I'll have a look the next time I'm in there which may be next week but isn't the info. more likely to be in the DRO?

Another thing is the CRO are getting a bit twitchy about material from there being photographed and then appearing on the net. I understand their position but having to put a fair size label over everthing, especially docs. is not very practical on occasion.
The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Apologies if it came over a little harsh, it was not meant like that. My opinion is that it's nice to see all these mines listed, but with content and photos.

If anyone researching looks at A2A (Access to Archives) they'll find out where information is held at local record offices, and there's plenty on Gobbet at CRO (Cornwall Record Office).

I have an old list here of 3,016 Cornish Mines if anyone would like a copy. It's in Microsoft Excel. I used to collect and collate all the Cornish Mining Information, but found that Devon was not getting the attention I wanted to give it, so I gave up collecting Cornish info, and decided to leave that to those that live there.

Have uploaded a few photos of Gobbet Tin Mine - Surface only as I've not been able to access the old adit level due to the water-board having secured it.
