Dear All,

My friend and I were aiming to go to visit a mine or may be two in County Durham and Derbyshire soon, in particular to perhaps catch a glimpse of fluorite in situ.

I was wondering whether anyone has any particular advice
as to which mines in particular we would be able to/ allowed to go to? Any other advice for beginners other than the safety basics?

Thanking you in advance.

Hi Sonal & welcome to aditnow ๐Ÿ˜‰

That kind of advice is not usually discussed openly with newbieโ€™s to the site as most people on here would prefer any nice sparkly minerals to remain in situ.

If you contribute to the forum/site and go on a few trips with fellow explorers so they can get to know you then who knows what kind of 'nice things' you may get to see ;)

If you want to see flourite in situ in Derbyshire you could try here http://www.bluejohn-cavern.co.uk/  to start with.

Ah yes, the Blue John cavern - it's a good trip, but one does find oneself wondering what's beyond the ropes!

There are some mined bits beyond the ropes in Blue John but the owners don't allow access these days - PDMHS made enquiries a few years back without any joy, AFAIK. Treak Cliff cavern also has some good exposures of fluorite, there's a big section of the Cliff Blue vein visible at one point where it forms the roof of the cavern. I can't remember off the top of my head whether there's much fluorite still visible in Temple Mine at Matlock Bath but it's worth a look in.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, i would most definitely like to take part with other explorers but currently i can only see one trip noted on the website (and after speaking with Simon Lowe of Aditnow) of the meeting organised in Alderley Edge but I am not free during that time.

So, please do keep me informed any one should you be planning a trip to go exploring (especially in the Derbyshire/ County Durham).

Thanks

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
