Hello all,
I'm a new member and, over the last day or so I've been spending a lot of time on this site. It occurs to me that the Forest of Dean is missing as a mining area (coal, iron, ochre and limestone mining/quarrying). Is this the correct forum to make a case for the area's inclusion? I'm assuming that Gloucestershire counts as South West rather than Midlands but feel free to point me in the right direction if I've gotthings wrong.

Whilst on the subject of MMRs.

Why is it that if you look at the SW MMR and look at the sub-sections, there are hardly any mines listed? I then, as an example, looked up South Crofty on the alphabetical list, and yes, it is there. Is there something wrong, or am I being my usual dense self?

Strange that but you are right..... There are most of the mines of Cornwall on here but they appear to have been entered on mass and not linked to the MMR (I think), I put a load of Teign Valley stuff and thats all gone to the right bit. 😉

Nope you're not dense, just had another play and it would appear that Crofty was not tagged to a MMR hence didn't appear. I just tagged it and eh voila its now there...

Oh mi gord looks like I better get tagging

Firstly, if folks want Gloucestershire included in the midlands im happy to do that.

Secondly, the tagging of mines too a mmr is sometimes overlooked, however, the biggest nightmare is tagging to a particular area of the mmr. There are hundreds/thousands that are not tagged, for example, Cwmorthin may be tagged to north Wales, but not to the Blaenau region. This is something that the regional editors are (hopefully) dealing with as an ongoing concern. The difficulty is trawling through each and every mine to check it!

I would have thought Gloucestershire would come under SW England.

Looking at the mine search by UK Region it is in SW England on there (I used Old Ham Iron Mine as a check).

It can't be in Midlands MMR if it is in SW England UK region!!

The Major Mining Regions system relies solely on the goodwill and hard work of the regional editors who look after them. The editors put in a lot of time and effort in maintaining the MMRs, and their work is greatly appreciated by everybody who uses this site I'm sure. But it's all voluntary (as is everything on this site) and it all takes time.

In the case of the SW, we've only recently had somebody volunteer for the Devon/Cornwall region, so it's understandable that it's not complete, please give him time :flowers:

Of course if anybody sees a glarng omission from an MMR they can post up on the forum and an admin can sort it out :)

ICLOK has it right; the Devon/Cornwall mines (I use that description rather than SW because that includes the Bath stone mines) were added in bulk from a database very kindly donated by Roy Morton and Roy Fellows. Hence the lack of MMR tagging.

I wasn't complaining Simon, just puzzled. I didn't realise it was a seperate operation to add to an MRR.

sorry this is partly my fault 😞
i'm responsible for the SW along with ICLOK (buts he's only just become admin) and simply haven't had the time to sort through the many mines in the all south west section into there respective sub areas.
i'm working on it along with updating allot of the mines already there to have proper descriptions...
but it take time..... ::)

No worries John, I know you weren't, I was just pre-empting any more 'why is this mmr not complete' questions 😉 The regional editors do a fine job of the task IMO.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
